There are few places quite like San Francisco City Hall for a wedding. The grand staircase, marble corridors, enormous windows, and beautiful architecture make even the smallest ceremony feel like an occasion.
As a San Francisco wedding photographer, I especially love City Hall because it works beautifully for couples who want something intimate without sacrificing the feeling—or the photographs—of a larger celebration.
And while City Hall weddings can look effortless, a little planning makes a big difference.
Why I Love Photographing Weddings at San Francisco City Hall
From a photography perspective, San Francisco City Hall gives us an incredible amount to work with in one location.
The architecture is elegant and timeless, but there are also quiet corners, dramatic staircases, balconies, window light, and architectural details that allow us to create a gallery with plenty of variety without spending the day traveling between locations.
It's also a perfect setting for the way I like to photograph weddings: a combination of natural, documentary moments and more intentional editorial portraits.
I'll give you direction when you need it, but I don't want your wedding to turn into one long photo shoot. City Hall gives us the opportunity to make beautiful portraits efficiently—and then let you get back to celebrating.
Give Yourself Time for Photographs
One of the biggest things I recommend is not treating the photography as something that needs to be squeezed into the few minutes immediately surrounding the ceremony.
Give yourselves some breathing room.
Having extra time allows us to explore the building, wait for particularly busy areas to clear, photograph your families, and create portraits without making you feel rushed.
And some of my favorite photographs happen in the in-between moments anyway—the walk down a hallway, fixing a dress, laughing together on the stairs, or seeing family immediately after the ceremony.
Those moments need a little space to happen.
Consider a First Look
If you're getting ready separately, a first look can be a wonderful way to begin the photography.
It gives the two of you a private moment together before everything starts and allows us to create some of your portraits before the ceremony.
More importantly, it gives you a chance to slow down.
Wedding days—even small ones—move surprisingly quickly. A first look can be one of the few moments when the two of you get to simply be together.
Don't Stop at City Hall
One of the advantages of getting married at San Francisco City Hall is that some of the city's most recognizable locations are only a short drive away.
Depending on your timeline, we can continue portraits somewhere that gives the gallery a completely different feeling—whether that's classic San Francisco architecture, the waterfront, the Presidio, or a view of the Golden Gate Bridge.
You don't need five locations. In fact, I'd rather choose one great second location and give ourselves enough time to actually enjoy it.
What Should You Wear for a San Francisco City Hall Wedding?
City Hall can handle fashion.
The scale and architecture work beautifully with everything from a traditional wedding gown and tuxedo to a chic suit, short dress, jumpsuit, or something completely unexpected.
My biggest advice is to wear something that feels like you, but don't be afraid to dress for the occasion.
Even if you're having a small civil ceremony, the setting can support a very elevated look—and photographs beautifully when you lean into it.
What About Family Photographs?
Absolutely bring the people who matter to you.
For family portraits, I recommend deciding on your must-have groupings before the wedding rather than figuring them out on the spot.
A little organization makes this part of the day much faster. We can get the important photographs without keeping everyone standing around, and then your family can go celebrate while we continue with portraits of the two of you.
Make the Day Your Own
A City Hall wedding doesn't have to feel like the abbreviated version of a "real" wedding.
Go somewhere wonderful for lunch afterward. Pop champagne. Invite your closest friends. Wear the incredible dress. Hire a car. Have a dinner party. Or keep the entire thing just the two of you.
There really aren't rules.
Some couples choose City Hall because they want something simple. Others build an entire wedding day around it.
Both can be beautiful.
